Framework Overview
The ASTC Professional Coach Credentialing Framework recognizes practicing coaches based on their competency, logged coaching practice, assessed session performance, ethical standing, and contribution to the coaching profession.
The framework provides structured pathways for professional recognition and global credibility in executive, leadership, team, and career coaching.
Credential Architecture
The Framework provides three credentials arranged as a progressive ladder. Progression is governed principally by logged coaching volume, breadth of client experience, and assessed performance — not by years elapsed.

Unlike training, coaching is delivered in a confidential one-to-one relationship. ASTC therefore assesses coaches on logged client hours, a recorded session with transcript, mentor coaching, and continuing supervision — evidence that has no counterpart in the trainer framework.
Scope of Practice
Coaching is not a licensed healthcare activity.
Coaching is not psychotherapy, counseling, clinical assessment, medical, legal, or financial advice. An ASTC credential confers no license to practice a regulated profession. Every credential holder must recognize when a client’s issue falls outside coaching, hold a written referral protocol, and act on it.
Professional Coach Credentials

ASTC Associate Coach (ASTC-AC)
Designed for newly qualified coaches building an independent practice.
This credential recognizes the ability to hold a safe, well-contracted session, listen without leading, and refer appropriately when an issue falls outside coaching.
Applicants should meet ALL of the following:
20 hours of coach-specific education from an ASTC-recognized or equivalent provider, or from any other recognized institute or body.
- 40 logged coaching hours with a minimum of 3 clients
- At least 20 hours must be paid engagements
- One recorded coaching session (10–30 minutes) with verbatim transcript
One recorded session scored against the CCF Level 1 rubric by one assessor, plus a case-based assessment on coaching practice and ethics. Pass mark 80%
Not required at award; 4 hours annually thereafter
Applicants holding recognized external coaching certifications may qualify through ASTC’s Recognition of Prior Certification route. ASTC may request supporting evidence or competency mapping documentation.

RPC never waives the recorded session assessment, the ethics examination, or the logged coaching hours.
ASTC Professional Coach (ASTC-PC)
Recognizes established coaches with a sustained client practice across varied contexts.
This credential validates the ability to carry a full engagement across diverse clients and organizational sponsors, challenge productively, and evidence client outcomes.
Applicants should meet ALL of the following:
- ASTC-recognized provider
- Equivalent recognized coaching provider
- Any other recognized institute or professional body
- 100 logged coaching hours with a minimum of 6 clients
- At least 50 paid coaching hours
- At least 30 coaching hours completed within the last 12 months
- Two recorded coaching sessions (25–40 minutes each) with different clients
- Verbatim transcript for each recorded session
- Two recorded sessions independently assessed against the CCF Level 2 rubric by two assessors
- Portfolio assessment
- Applied ethics and scope-of-practice examination
- Minimum passing score: 80%
Applicants holding recognized professional-level coaching credentials may qualify through the RPC pathway.
ASTC may conduct a competency review or interview where necessary.

- Postgraduate qualifications in Coaching or Coaching Psychology
- Assessed executive coach development programs
ASTC Master Coach (ASTC-MC)
Recognizes senior coaches who work with executive and complex clients, develop other coaches, and shape coaching practice.
This credential reflects mastery-level capability and significant contribution to the profession.
Applicants should meet ALL of the following:
- Coaching Supervision
- Systemic Coaching
- Coach Development
- 1,200 logged coaching hours with a minimum of 15 clients
- At least 500 paid coaching hours
- At least 100 coaching hours completed within the last 12 months
- Two recorded coaching sessions with executive-level or otherwise complex clients
- Verbatim transcript for each recorded session
- Two recorded sessions independently assessed by two ASTC-MC assessors
- Portfolio assessment
- Capstone project based on a specific coaching case
- Final decision ratified by the Credentialing and Standards Council
Professionals holding senior-level trainer designations or internationally recognized master trainer certifications may qualify through the RPC route.
ASTC may require: Competency mapping, Portfolio review, Professional interview, Industry references
Specialization Endorsements
Holders of ASTC-PC or ASTC-MC may add a recorded specialization to their credential. An endorsement is not a separate credential.

All applicants must adhere to the following professional standards to maintain the integrity, quality, and trust of ASTC credentials.
- Agree to comply with the ASTC Code of Ethics and the Scope of Practice Statement
- Obtain written, informed client consent before recording any session submitted
- Maintain professional conduct and integrity
- Maintain continuing professional development (CPD) and coaching supervision
- Hold professional liability insurance, or state how client risk is otherwise managed
- Avoid misrepresentation of credentials
- Provide accurate and verifiable information
Two domains are mandatory gates: Ethical Practice and Scope of Practice, Wellbeing & Referral. A score below threshold in either results in a decline, regardless of overall performance.
Recordings and transcripts are reviewed only by assigned assessors under confidentiality undertaking, and are destroyed within 180 days of the final decision.
ASTC reserves the right to request additional evidence or conduct professional review where necessary.
